Whether they are raising a toddler or a teenager, tantrums are something that parents have to deal with on a daily basis. Dealing with these tantrums isn’t always the easiest thing to do, which is why parenting expert Dr. Becky Kennedy recently revealed three simple words that can stop a tantrum at any age.

In a clip shared on her Instagram page, Dr. Kennedy explained that parents can deescalate tantrum situations by just saying to their kid: “I believe you.”

Dr. Kennedy mentions several examples of common tantrum situations. For example, your toddler may be upset because you say no to them having an ice cream, or your teen may be upset because you are not comfortable with them going to a party.

By saying the words “I believe you” while you hold your boundary, as Dr. Kennedy puts it, the kids feel more connected to you, and their entire experience becomes more “manageable.”

“When someone gets upset, whether they’re a toddler or a teen, so much of them wants to feel real and seen and believed,” Dr. Kennedy says in the video.
