Slow living is a contemporary lifestyle approach that advocates for slowing down the pace of modern life, in favor of enjoying those precious everyday moments. If you’re a parent of young children, the idea of slowing down may seem impossible, but in fact, kids are often far better than adults are at pausing and enjoying the everyday. Check out these simple tips on how to introduce a little bit of slow living to your lifestyle, even if the rest of the week is lived at a super-fast pace.

Cut Out Distractions

Set aside one day a week—probably one of the weekend days for ease – where nobody in the family has any commitments or places to be. This can help everyone to relax and focus on enjoying the present moment, although it doesn’t mean that you can’t leave the house – why not take a mindful walk together, or sit in your local cafe with some books and toys to keep everyone entertained?

Limit Screen Time

Screens can create the effect of time rushing by. You open your phone to check a friend’s latest post, and suddenly the morning has gone. You can slow down your family time by limiting (or banning) screens. If there are protests, encourage reading, painting, or writing as an alternative activity, instead. Or, why not have some quality family time playing a game together – the kids will soon forget that screens are off-limits once you’re all laughing around a great board game.

Bring Nature In

Slow living is often about pausing and noticing the world around you. Kids are great at this skill. Bring some nature inside by purchasing some cut flowers, or go outside and collect some leaves and interesting plants. Spend some time observing them with your kids, talking about what you can see. This activity will develop your child’s vocabulary and interest in the natural world, and it’s calming and soothing for all family members.

Books are central to children’s education, and parents can use literature to teach their kids about issues and activities outside of the classroom, too. Many children make friends easily and naturally at school, but if your kid is struggling, or if you think discussing what good friendships look like could be useful, it’s possible to do this through books. Check out these three titles, each of which delivers inspiring and practical messages to help children feel empathy for others and make and maintain friendships.

All About Friends by Felicity Brooks and Mar Ferrero

This title is great for slightly younger children. It teaches children why friendships are so important to our health and happiness, and offers some good advice on how to make friends (offer to share something, suggest a game to play). It also discusses the possibility that we can fall out with our friends and suggests great remedies for solving some common friendship problems.

The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle

Eric Carle is a best-selling children’s author for a reason—he knows how to write an exceptionally entertaining story that is also touching and poignant. This classic follows the grouchy ladybug who is struggling to make friends or even be nice to anyone. As the book follows his journey, he learns the importance of being polite and courteous to others and accepting friendship when it is offered.

The Boy at the Back of the Class by Onjali Q. Raúf

This touching story helps its readers to imagine the struggles of a refugee boy arriving in a new and strange classroom for the first time. It’s a great option for teaching kids about empathy and how to offer friendship to others. It’s also useful for introducing topics such as asylum-seeking to slightly older children who might have questions about this.

Does your kid ever talk to you about their history lessons at school? Hopefully, they’ve got an inspiring teacher and are interested in this lesson. However, all too often schools fail to impart a real love of history, and it is taught through dry textbooks rather than through interacting with any historical materials or artifacts. Luckily, you can take matters into your own hands by introducing your kid to the wonders of history yourself. If you’re not sure how just check out these simple yet effective tips.

Visit a Museum

One of the most immediate ways of engaging your kids with history is to visit a good museum. Start with a fairly general one, which has displays on ancient and more recent history, before you specialize in more specific exhibitions and displays. Children love finding out about the world through looking at artifacts, and it’s likely that in some museums they will be eager to spend more time there than you!

Subscribe to a Magazine

There are loads of great magazines out there aimed at kids, which will teach them about history (or pretty much any subject you like). Lots of kids like the routine of getting a weekly or monthly magazine through the door, and because the subscription is theirs they can take ownership of the subject. Be warned, it’s likely that if you do opt for a magazine subscription, you will be hearing lots of facts as your child reads them out to you, but at least they will be taking a real interest in history!

Take a Trip

Perhaps the most effective way of engaging children in history is to take them to view historical sites. Whether it’s the rugged remains of an Iron Age hill fort, a medieval castle, or a Victorian-era house, this can bring history alive for kids in a way that reading or watching videos simply can’t.

As almost any parent will tell you, once your kid has started asking for a phone, they won’t stop until they’ve got one. It’s understandable why so many children and teens desperately want phones—they offer independence, autonomy, and a chance to fit in and socialize with peers. However, many parents have significant concerns about their children’s safety online and are reluctant to buy them their own phones. If this is a decision you’re currently struggling with, check out this advice on points to consider when buying your child a phone.

What Will It Be Used For?

If your child regularly has to get home from school due to your work pattern, it may be worth buying them a phone so that you can keep track of them and so that they can navigate their way home, whether they’re walking or taking public transport. In this scenario, buying your child a phone can provide you both with some peace of mind, and it will also deliver greater independence to your child which can be a really positive thing.

Do They Need a Smart Phone?

When children ask for a phone, they mean a smartphone. Most teens are desperate for the latest, coolest model which can access every app they desire and take plenty of sharp, detailed photos. However, if you want to reduce your parental anxieties about the safety of smartphones, why not buy your child an old-school mobile? This will enable them to text and call you should they need to, but they won’t have access to the Internet. Of course, this option is unlikely to be popular with your kid, so it may take some negotiating and an agreement as to what age you will agree to let them have a smartphone.

Talk to Others

Before you make the final decision, it may be worth checking in with other parents and with teachers at your child’s school. It may turn out that your child’s peer group is currently struggling with some nasty cyberbullying via WhatsApp, or that parents in your circle have concerns about the influence of apps such as TikTok. Gaining this knowledge can help you to have conversations with your child about your expectations relating to their phone use, and it may even sway your final decision one way or another, so it’s definitely worth doing some investigating.

The best condiments are those that work just as well with sweet and savory meals. This is why applesauce is such a perennial favorite. Whether you choose to serve it alongside some roast pork, as a side with some smoked chicken, or piled on top of cream as a sweet treat, having a pot of homemade applesauce in the fridge will save you time and effort throughout the week. Check out this recipe for a simple yet delicious apple sauce which can be used in so many ways.

Ingredients (to make 2 cups of apple sauce):

  • 6 large apples
  • 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
  • Juice of half a lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of sultanas (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Peel and core the apples and cut into cubes.
  2. Heat the butter in a pan and add the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir well, making sure it doesn’t burn.
  3. After 1 – 2 minutes, add the cubed apple and the lemon juice. You may need to add a splash of water at this point to stop it from burning.
  4. Simmer on a medium heat for 10 – 15 minutes. Add the sultanas in the last minute of cooking, if using.
  5. Remove from the heat and allow to cool before decanting into a jar. This sauce will store in the fridge for up to two weeks.

With all the best intentions in the world, sometimes unforeseen circumstances or commitments mean that you can’t always stick to having a date night with your partner. However, date nights are really important, especially if you have kids. They give you time and space to really talk and reconnect, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. If your child’s feeling poorly or your babysitter’s canceled and you’re not able to head out to a nice restaurant, check out these ideas for a simple at home date night so you can still check in with your partner.

Dance

You may not be able to get out to a dance floor, but why not bring the party to your kitchen or living room? Simply put on a playlist of some of your favorite songs and dance with your partner. You can take it seriously or dance like nobody’s watching, and if the kids want to come and join in then that will only increase the fun!

Solve A Puzzle

Whether you opt for a board game, a jigsaw puzzle or a card game, playing games and solving puzzles together can be great fun and strengthen your bond. If your kids need you, you can easily pause the game to go and check on them, and if the game is taking a long time to finish then you can set it aside until your next date night.

Cook Together

Cooking a meal together is a great way to collaborate and communicate. As long as neither of you gets bossy in the kitchen, you can have fun experimenting with new ingredients and following a new recipe. Of course, you will also get to enjoy all of your hard work in the shape of a (hopefully delicious) meal. This date night idea also doesn’t take up too much time, and if one of you needs to check on the kids then that’s easily done.

When you’re a parent, it can feel like much of your time is taken up with ferrying your kids where they need to be—whether that’s the dentist, school or dance practice. While it’s important to make sure that your kids have plenty of activities and opportunities for socializing, you need to make sure you’re not missing out, either. Here are three simple ways to connect and expand your social circle as a parent.

Invite Other Parents For Coffee

When you’re standing at the school gates waiting for your kids at the end of the day, make an effort to engage with the other parents around you. The chances are, if you suggest a coffee morning meet up, plenty of others will want to join. Making new friends as an adult is hard enough, let alone when you’re also focused on your parenting. By reaching out to others with a simple invitation, they will really appreciate it and make the same effort with you.

Join A Club

Whether your passions lie in crafting, singing or exercise, joining a group focused on something you love is a great way to meet new likeminded people. Carve some time for yourself out of your busy week and allow yourself an hour or two to focus on the things you enjoy. Meeting people through hobbies means you’re guaranteed to have something in common, so the conversation can always fall back to your shared interests if you’re not sure what to say!

Host A Get Together

Whether you plan a barbecue in the backyard or a more formal dinner party, inviting your friends, acquaintances and neighbors round to yours will quickly build up social bonds. These events don’t need to be regular, it’s enough to invite people around once or twice a year to signal that you are interested in developing and strengthening your social circle.

The Harry Potter movies remain world-famous, despite it being over twenty years since the first film was released. If your kid (or you) is a huge fan of the magical series, then there are a few destinations across the UK which you need to make sure you visit. Promising awe, wonder and plenty of fun for the whole family, visiting these destinations can help you understand and feel the magic of the world of Harry Potter just that little bit deeper.

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

This stunning medieval castle was used for many of the scenes in the Harry Potter series, including the scenes of the quidditch matches and Harry’s lessons in broom riding. Visitors can now enjoy some broomstick riding lessons on the front lawn, and there’s plenty of references and Harry Potter trivia dotted around the castle to keep you entertained.

Glenfinnan Viaduct, Inverness-shire

Who could every forget those iconic scenes of the steam train crossing this stunning viaduct, taking Harry and his companions towards Hogwarts? Amazingly, nothing in those scenes was the result of special effects – you can see the steam train crossing the viaduct for yourself at around 10am each morning. The area is beautiful and great for hiking in, too.

Christ Church College, Oxford

The university city of Oxford boasts some truly beautiful buildings, so it’s no wonder that the creative team involved in Harry Potter decided to film some of the scenes here. If you head to Christ Church College, you will see the cloisters which appear in many scenes throughout the series, and the dining hall is said to have inspired the set designers when it came to creating Hogwarts’ Great Hall.

Sometimes, the long summer break from school can feel like it stretches on forever, which, if you’re a parent, may not be ideal. Keeping your kids busy and entertained can feel draining at the best of times, but doing it week in, week out while you’re trying to work through the hottest months of the year can feel impossible. Why not try teaching your kids some key skills, so that they can keep learning over the vacation and practice these skills to give you a break?

Puncture Repair

If your kid rides a bike, it’s a great idea to teach them how to fix a puncture. Not only will this ensure that they can patch up their bike without your assistance, it’s a great life skill which will develop their independence for the future.

Bake Off

Teaching your kids a simple baking recipe can be a great way to keep them busy over the vacation. Baking also involves key skills, such as careful measuring, timing, and mixing. Cupcakes are a great option, as the batter is super simple to make. You can also extend their skill sets by asking that they decorate the cakes once they have cooled.

Simple Stitches

Why not set your kid a sewing project? You can do it with them side by side if they’re younger and need supervision with the needles, or if they’re older you can teach them some simple stitches and then let them get creative!

Depending on where you live, the long summer vacation from school may have just started, or be about to begin. It’s understandable that the prospect of several weeks of no school makes many parents feel a little anxious and concerned—after all, lots of kids need entertainment over their summer break, and this can cost parents money and time. Here are three fun free or low-cost activities to do outdoors with your kids this summer.

Get Gardening

Whether you have a sprawling backyard, a small windowsill, or access to a public allotment, everyone can get involved in gardening. You can plant herbs in small pots and keep them well-watered and in the sunlight at home. Tomatoes and strawberries also do well grown in pots, but will also need plenty of warm sunshine. If you have a larger space, try planting some runner beans (they will need poles to grow up and around) and lettuces so you and the kids can make plenty of fresh salads.

Take the Library Outside

Why not head to your local park with some snacks and a stack of great books? While younger children are likely to only sit and listen for a short amount of time, if there is a playground nearby then you can sit and watch them while also dipping into your book. Older children should really enjoy being able to relax on the grass and read some of their favorite books outside.

Enjoy a Picnic

When you’re planning a picnic, make sure the kids play an important role in preparing everything and getting it ready. Older kids can make sandwiches for everyone and cut up fresh fruit or salads, while younger children will enjoy fetching a list of packaged snacks and treats from the cupboards. Make sure you choose a spot to eat your picnic which everyone agrees on, and bring a blanket plus some warm layers in case the weather takes a turn!
