Coming up with new meals to cook for your family isn’t an easy task, but Anna Stanford will help you get it done! She’s the mastermind behind the popular food blog Anna’s Family Kitchen, who built quite a following when she started sharing her favorite healthy and simple family recipes with the world.

Stanford is a mom of three, who knows exactly how hard it can be to prepare meals that your entire family can enjoy. Her youngest son Finn is a fussy eater, her middle child Thomas “eats like a grown man”, while her oldest daughter Mia is a vegetarian – so they all have different wants and needs when it comes to food.

Stanford was always committed to feeding her family healthy, home-cooked, wholesome meals, and she eventually decided to share her recipes with the world and help other moms do the same.

“I strive to create healthy meals which all the whole family will enjoy but that don’t require hours of prep in the kitchen or masses of washing up… I am used to rising to the challenges of delivering balanced meals that appeal to my children, their friends, my husband and our friends,” she writes on her official website.

In addition to sharing her recipes online, Stanford also published a family-friendly cookbook Anna’s Family Kitchen, which includes 70 recipes, created to make the pressures of day-to-day cooking a little bit easier.

Ants on a log is, in many ways, a perfect snack for kids. It is tasty and looks cool while also being healthy. On top of that, it is simple to make, allowing kids to take part in preparation. You just take a veggie or a fruit, fill it up with a spread, and add “ants” in the form of raisins, nuts, olives, or chocolate chips on top.

Additionally, ants on a log allow you to be creative by using different ingredients. To provide you with some inspiration, we put together sweet and savory ideas that kids will love, and adults will want to try.

Sweet Ants on a Log Ideas

Fruit works best as a log in sweet ants on log variations. Consider using a classic like celery or banana sliced lengthwise or apples, pears, and peaches sliced in wedges. For the filling, use peanut butter or Greek yogurt. Finally, raisins, nuts, dried fruit, berries, and chocolate chips work great as ants in these combinations.

Savory Ants on a Log Ideas

You can also use celery as a log for savory ants on a log variation or carrots and cucumbers. Just make sure to scrape out the seeds in the cucumber if that’s your veggie of choice. Cream cheese works best for filling with hummus, and mashed avocado also being a great option. For the ants, go with peas, sweet corn, sliced olives, seeds, or nuts.

Broccoli is one of the most universally hated veggies among children, and if your kids avoid it like a plague – you’re not alone. Aversion to broccoli doesn’t only apply to picky eaters, and there are several reasons why kids don’t seem to be too fond of this veggie.

Bad Example

Children learn most of their behaviors by example, and it’s common for them to avoid certain foods because they’ve seen someone else do it – including yourself. You’ll have an easier time convincing them that broccoli is delicious if you eat it on a regular basis, so try to set a good example by adding it to your menu.

Scientific Reasons

Studies suggest there’s a scientific reason why kids hate broccoli from the bottom of their hearts. Broccoli and other veggies from the brassica group, such as cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts, can produce lingering smells when their enzymes are combined with bacteria in saliva. Adults tend to tolerate the odors over time, while children aren’t used to them and this can impact their relationship with certain foods.

Cooking Method

Some kids don’t enjoy broccoli because they simply don’t find it tasty, but there are ways to fix this issue. Instead of simply boiling and steaming broccoli or preparing it in a microwave, consider exploring other cooking methods and serving it with delicious foods that your kid actually enjoys.

No holiday season is complete without some gingerbread cookies, and most kids can’t get enough of them. If your little ones feel the same way, it’s important to try and keep your gingerbread cookies on the healthy side, and our brief guide is here to help you do that.

Whole-Wheat Flour

Most people use white and all-purpose flour when making cookies and other baked goods, but whole-wheat flour can help you keep things on the healthy side.

Plant-Based Milk

If your recipe for gingerbread cookies calls for milk, consider using non-fat and plant-based alternatives because they have a lower fat and calorie count than dairy milk.

Natural Sweeteners

If you’re relying on sugar to boost the flavor of your cookies, it’s time to change your ways. There are many natural sweeteners that can make your cookies even more delicious, including molasses and honey.

Limit Icing

Icing is one of the unhealthiest parts of gingerbread cookies because it is mostly made of sugar. It’s important to use it in moderation or consider replacing sugar with stevia if possible.

Moderation is Key

Moderation is key when it comes to eating all unhealthy foods, and gingerbread cookies are no different. Don’t let your kids eat them in excess and limit the number of cookies they’re allowed to take.

Parenthood comes with an overwhelming list of dos and don’ts, making it tough to remember everything your child should or shouldn’t have. However, one piece of advice stands out, backed by medical reasons, when it comes to feeding your baby—avoid giving them honey.

Why Should Babies Avoid Honey?

Honey may seem harmless, but for babies under 12 months, it poses a hidden risk. It can contain Clostridium botulinum spores, which their undeveloped digestive systems can’t handle. These spores can produce a toxin that leads to infant botulism, a serious condition. Symptoms include weak muscles, trouble feeding, a soft cry, constipation, and a generally floppy appearance.

How to Protect Your Baby from Infant Botulism

To prevent infant botulism, completely avoid giving honey to babies under one year old. This includes not only raw honey but also any foods that list honey as an ingredient, like certain crackers or baked goods. Although corn syrups might also carry similar bacteria, there’s no clear evidence of a connection yet. If you’re unsure, it’s best to check with your pediatrician before introducing these to your child.

When Can Kids Safely Have Honey?

Once your child turns one, their digestive system is more developed and can safely handle the spores that may be present in honey. After this milestone, honey can be a sweet and safe addition to their diet without the risk of botulism.

It’s understandable that kids have different preferences when it comes to food. However, it becomes an issue when they refuse to eat food that is healthy for them and will help them grow, such as veggies, fruit, eggs, and dairy.

Now, you shouldn’t force your kids to eat food they don’t like because that will only make them hate it more. Instead, resort to these tips and tricks.

Hide Them in Smoothies

One of the best ways to have your kids consume needed nutrients from food they don’t like is to “hide” them in smoothies. Make a fruit smoothie, but throw in some broccoli, spinach, or carrots. They will make it healthier without changing the taste too much.

Give Them a Choice

Pick out two or three healthy food options and have your kids decide on which one they want. This way, they will feel like they are in charge and will likely be more inclined to eat the option they pick out.

Make Healthy Food Fun

One great way to encourage kids to eat healthy food they don’t like is to make it more fun. Play with the shapes of the food, let them take part in cooking, or even come up with a game that will keep them occupied and not thinking about the fact they are eating something they don’t like.

Bribe Them

Finally, if nothing works, you can always try to bribe them. Promise them their favorite food for the next meal if they eat healthy food. You can also let them know they can have a double serving of the dessert or promise them to buy a new toy if they eat healthy for a certain period of time.

Cereal is one of the first things that most kids think of when someone mentions breakfast, but it’s definitely not the healthiest dish to eat first thing in the morning. If you’re looking for some healthy alternatives that your little ones will enjoy just as much, here are three delicious options worth exploring.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal is basically cereal’s healthier cousin, and it’s the first thing parents reach for when trying to eliminate cereal from their kids’ diets. Unlike cereal, it’s not packed with sugar, but you can still make it sweet by adding some fruits to the mix, thus also upping its fiber content.

Greek Yogurt Parfait

If you’re looking for a protein-rich breakfast that will keep your kids energized for the rest of the day, it doesn’t get much better than Greek yogurt parfait. There are many sweetened options on the market, but it’s best to stick to plain Greek yogurt and make it extra delicious by topping it with fruits, nuts, seeds, and honey for extra sweetness.

Smoothie Bowls

Smoothie bowls are another great healthy breakfast option that can be enjoyed by all members of your family. Even though most people simply drink a smoothie from a cup, you can make it extra appealing to your little ones by serving it inside a bowl and topping it with their favorite fruits.
