A good night’s sleep is essential for your child’s development, and the amount of sleep they need will vary with age. Figuring it how much sleep they need isn’t always easy, but there are some warning signs that can tell you when your kid isn’t getting enough rest, starting with these five.

Trouble Waking Up

Children who aren’t getting enough sleep often struggle to get up in the morning, seem irritable after leaving the bed, or usually take a long time to fully wake up.

Constant Napping

Constant napping is often caused by a lack of sleep. If your kid is constantly complaining about feeling tired and taking naps at unusual times, they’re probably not getting enough rest at night.

Mood Swings

Mood swings and irritability are common side effects of sleep deprivation, which can lead to frequent tantrums, trouble managing emotions, and crankiness.

Hyperactivity

The lack of sleep can also result in hyperactivity. This symptom can make it difficult to get to the bottom of the problem because you might think your kid is too energetic to be sleep-deprived.

Poor Grades

Poor sleep hygiene can reflect on your child’s school performance. Sleep deprivation can negatively impact memory, focus, and analytical thought, and your child’s grades may suffer in the process.

When listening to their parents talk, kids don’t just pay attention to the words they hear. They also pay attention to the tone and body language their parents use. Because of this, the same words can sound quite different to kids depending on how they are spoken.

Shirin Galili, mom of three and former teacher, recently shared a video on Instagram in which she demonstrated the importance of tone and body language when talking to kids.

Galili showcased three situations that most parents encounter and need to communicate with their kids. This includes telling her child to “get in the car,” to “use calm and kind words” when upset, and to warn them that they said they’ll “clean up their mess.”

In each of the situations, Galili first communicates with her child by raising her voice and using strict body language before repeating the same words in a playful and gentler manner.

Watching the video, it becomes clear which type of tone and body language is more suitable and likely to get a response from kids.

“Kids only absorb about 7% of our words. The other 93% of what kids are absorbing is our tone of voice (38%) and our body language (55%). It’s not just about using the “right scripts”. For true effectiveness, it needs to be the right combination,” Galili shared in the caption of the video that already got close to two million views.

Grammy Award-winning musician John Legend recently sat down with his eight-year-old daughter Luna, which he shares with wife Chrissy Teigen, to discuss his new acclaimed children’s album titled My Favorite Dream. The result was an adorable interview shared on YouTube by Billboard magazine.

To start off the conversation, Luna tried to work out a compromise so her father would allow her to own a smartphone before she turns 16. However, it appears that Legend is quite set on his strict rule.

The two then discussed My Favorite Dream, with Luna displaying her journalism talent and her father sharing some previously unknown details about the album.

When talking about his favorite songs on the record, Legend singled out “Always Come Back.”

I wrote it for you guys,” Legend said. “And I have to travel a lot for work, mommy has to go away for work sometimes, but we’ve always been telling you since you were a little baby that mommy and daddy always come back.”

Luna then shared her own favorites, saying she likes the most “Always Come Back,” “L-O-V-E” and Legend’s rendition of Bob Marley and the Wailers’ 1977 hit “Three Little Birds.”

“Those are the ones that I drew,” said Luna, referencing the fact that she drew the covers for these three songs when they were released as singles.

Elsewhere in the interview, the two also touched on Legend’s inspiration for the album and shared a lot more sweet father and daughter moments. Check out the interview in full below.

Parents always try to provide their child with enough attention and make them feel loved all the time. However, children ocassionally need even more than that and it is up for parents to recognize that and adress it promptly.

While children will rarely communicate their desire for more attention openly, they will provide you with signs that will make it obvious.

Misbehavior

When children need more attention, they will try to get it in any way possible. This will usually include change of behavior to worse like tantrums and misbehavior. In this instance, they will be getting negative attention, but even that will do it for them.

Poor Communication Etiquette

Children might start interrupting you while you talk or communicate by yelling. This means they are probably feeling ignored.

Withdrawal

If you notice that your child is becoming withdrawn, that is usually a good sign that they need more attention. This will likely include avoiding spending time with the rest of the family, losing interest in activities, and limiting their communication to short answers.

Neediness

Your kid wanting to spend all of their time with you, following you everywhere, and always asking for help is also a good indication of a desire for more attention. By displaying this behavior and staying close, they are unintentionally trying to “force” you to pay attention to them.

When you give kids an opportunity to wish for anything, they are most likely to wish for a new toy or something outrageous like a pet dinosaur. But sometimes, they wish for things you would never guess, as a recent video shared by TikTok user Aurora Solorio shows.

Solorio recently took her daughter to meet a shopping mall Santa Claus. While sitting on Santa’s lap, the little girl asked for something that no one expected; she said she wants a baby sister.

Solorio managed to capture the exact moment when her daughter made the request, with Santa turning to her and giving her a meaningful look that probably meant: “this wish is on you to fulfill.”

“POV: your daughter asked SANTA for a baby sister, the look he gave me after,” Solorio wrote in the text attached to the video that received 3.4 million views since being posted in early December.

Other TikTok users were genuinely amused by the video, and some of them shared similar experiences in the comments section.

“My daughter asked in july for a sibling and a cat for her bday. I got her a cat and conceived in June without knowing,” one person commented.

“My son asked for a baby…ended up with a baby brother 9 months later. We visited the same Santa that year with the new baby and he whispered to my oldest “see you got that baby you asked for,” another added.

Parents are usually not too happy when their teenager starts going to parties. But there is no point in objecting to it because you risk spoiling your relationship with your teen that way or causing them to go out behind your back. Instead of trying to stop them from going, here is how you should handle it.

Ask for Basic Information

You will feel peace of mind if you know some basic information about the party. Ask your teen questions like: Where is the party happening? How long will it take? How many people do they know there? Will there be adult supervision? Knowing the answers to these questions will make you more confident in letting the teen go.

Set Some Ground Rules

Of course, you should set some ground rules. Make sure to let them know what kind of behavior you will not tolerate and settle on a curfew. Also, let them know about any possible punishment beforehand so they know what’s at risk.

Give Them a “No Questions Asked” Pass

Make sure your kid is open to asking for your help if needed. Let them know that they can call you at any time for help or to pick them up and that you’ll ask no questions.

Calm Their Nerves

If your teen is just starting to go to parties, they might feel nervous, and you, as a parent, should help calm their nerves. Give them some basic advice on how to behave, how to meet new people, and how to avoid uncomfortable situations. Regardless of how worried you might be, you still want them to have fun.

We know that aunts have a special bond with nieces and nephews. Kids often feel more free to showcase their personalities when they are in the company of their aunts, and a recent funny video shared on TikTok provides a perfect example of that.

In the clip, a digital creator named Aspen is shown holding her 8-month-old niece. Aspen is visibly excited because the little girl is calm in her hands and isn’t asking for Mom.

“Guys, she’s letting me hold her without crying. She’s usually attached to her mom … but you letting me hold you?” Aspen says at one point.

As soon as she said that, her niece gave her the cutest eye roll we have ever seen.

“pov: your niece is the sassiest human you’ve ever met, and she’s only 8 months old,” Aspen shared in the text attached to the video.

The video ended up getting millions of views and making numerous internet users laugh. Some of them even tried to guess what Aspen’s niece was thinking at that particular moment.

“shes like ‘see this why I don’t let you hold me’,” one TikToker wrote in the comments section.

“she’s like ‘letting you? no. tolerating..maybe’,” another added.

Flu season is upon us and we all know how important it is to build a healthy immune system to fight off those nasty coughs and colds. Kids are more prone to getting sick than adults because their immune systems are still developing and kindergartens and schools are the perfect breeding ground for all kinds of viruses. Here are some ways you can help to support your kids’ immune systems and keep them healthy and happy this winter

Plenty of Fruits and Veggies

The key to a healthy immune system is enjoying a balanced diet packed with immune-boosting vitamins and minerals. With kids, this can be easier said than done. Encourage your kids to eat lots of colorful, fresh foods wherever you can. If you have a picky eater, try ‘hiding’ fruits and veggies in sauces, sweet treats, or smoothies.

Physical Activity

Spending time outside and staying active is another essential part of healthy immune function. Try to make sure your kids are spending at least 30 minutes a day outside and get them moving. Running, playing, sports, or taking a brisk walk in nature are all great ways to increase the circulation of immune cells and flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways.

Good Hygiene

Unsurprisingly, good hygiene is also important for keeping germs at bay. Encourage your kids to regularly wash their hands with soap and warm water, cough and sneeze into a tissue, and keep their distance from classmates who are unwell.

Enough Sleep

Getting enough sleep helps the body repair which supports the immune system. Without enough sleep, kids may become more likely to get sick. Our tip? Stick to a regular sleep schedule and give your child at least 30 minutes to relax before bed, without screens if you can.

It’s understandable that kids have different preferences when it comes to food. However, it becomes an issue when they refuse to eat food that is healthy for them and will help them grow, such as veggies, fruit, eggs, and dairy.

Now, you shouldn’t force your kids to eat food they don’t like because that will only make them hate it more. Instead, resort to these tips and tricks.

Hide Them in Smoothies

One of the best ways to have your kids consume needed nutrients from food they don’t like is to “hide” them in smoothies. Make a fruit smoothie, but throw in some broccoli, spinach, or carrots. They will make it healthier without changing the taste too much.

Give Them a Choice

Pick out two or three healthy food options and have your kids decide on which one they want. This way, they will feel like they are in charge and will likely be more inclined to eat the option they pick out.

Make Healthy Food Fun

One great way to encourage kids to eat healthy food they don’t like is to make it more fun. Play with the shapes of the food, let them take part in cooking, or even come up with a game that will keep them occupied and not thinking about the fact they are eating something they don’t like.

Bribe Them

Finally, if nothing works, you can always try to bribe them. Promise them their favorite food for the next meal if they eat healthy food. You can also let them know they can have a double serving of the dessert or promise them to buy a new toy if they eat healthy for a certain period of time.
