Raising kids with a chronic condition is quite a challenge, and Usher is one of the celebrities who had to learn this first-hand. The R&B singer recently revealed how he dealt with having one of his children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of six.
Usher has two children with his ex-wife Tameka Foster:15-year-old Usher “Cinco” V and 14-year-old Naviyd Ely. He’s also the father of two more children with his longtime girlfriend Jenn Goicoechea: Sovereign Bo, 3, and a son, Sire Castrello, 2.
The Grammy-winning singer learned that one of his children with Foster had Type 1 diabetes, and this was quite an adjustment for their co-parenting arrangement following their divorce in 2009.
“From the moment that Type 1 diabetes was a conversation, it was a re-acclimation to life. It comes with a great deal of consideration and commitment in itself because we’re all managing to make certain that my child makes the right decisions to have a happy, healthy life,” Usher told People.
The Grammy-winning singer is now committed to helping other children who are trying to navigate life with this disorder. He recently joined forces with Sanofi’s The 1 Pledge Movement to raise awareness about early detection of Type 1 diabetes because he wishes he knew more about it earlier.
