The best condiments are those that work just as well with sweet and savory meals. This is why applesauce is such a perennial favorite. Whether you choose to serve it alongside some roast pork, as a side with some smoked chicken, or piled on top of cream as a sweet treat, having a pot of homemade applesauce in the fridge will save you time and effort throughout the week. Check out this recipe for a simple yet delicious apple sauce which can be used in so many ways.
Ingredients (to make 2 cups of apple sauce):
- 6 large apples
- 1 tablespoon of unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons of brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon of nutmeg
- Juice of half a lemon
- 2 tablespoons of sultanas (optional)
Instructions:
- Peel and core the apples and cut into cubes.
- Heat the butter in a pan and add the sugar, cinnamon and nutmeg. Stir well, making sure it doesn’t burn.
- After 1 – 2 minutes, add the cubed apple and the lemon juice. You may need to add a splash of water at this point to stop it from burning.
- Simmer on a medium heat for 10 – 15 minutes. Add the sultanas in the last minute of cooking, if using.
- Remove from the heat and allow to cool before decanting into a jar. This sauce will store in the fridge for up to two weeks.
