Toddlers enjoy listening to music and will frequently hum or sing their favorite tunes. Most of the time, those tunes are nursery rhymes or lullabies. But it turns out that some toddlers develop a sophisticated taste in music from an early age, and that can lead to some humorous situations, as a recent viral video shared by TikTok user Rachael Hampshire shows.

The clip features Hampshire’s toddler Ivy singing the Beatles’ “Hey Jude” while being carried by her dad during a hike. However, it doesn’t take long before Ivy gets carried away and starts screaming the words, which prompts laughter from her mom and dad.

“Take your kids on a nice hike to aggressively sing Hey Jude,” Hampshire wrote in the video.

The video quickly started making rounds on social media, with TikTok users being delighted by Ivy’s rendition of the Beatles’ hit song and saying it made them laugh.

“As a Jude I can say this is one of my favourite versions. ‘MAKE IT BETTER’,” one TikTok user wrote in the comments section.

“I’ve been in bed with bronchitis since Christmas Eve feeling thoroughly miserable, this is the first thing that’s properly made me laugh in days!” another added.

Calming an upset toddler sometimes seems like an impossible challenge. They ignore all your attempts, whether it’s giving them love and affection or trying to reason with them, and just want to go through with their tantrums. If you find yourself in this kind of situation, you might consider taking a page from Alivia Cromartie’s book and try doing “zoomies.”

Zoomies are often associated with dogs and refer to sudden bursts of energy that send puppers franticly running around. Dogs usually engage in this when they have excess energy to burn or want to show their happiness.

Apparently, Cromartie, who is a content creator on TikTok, figured out toddlers enjoy witnessing zoomies, and watching the activity has a calming effect on them.

A viral video shared a while back on TikTok show Cromartie doing “zoomies” around her daughter Icey, who is visibly upset. Every time Cromartie passes by Icey, the girl becomes calmer until she eventually begins to laugh.

“POV: This is how you gentle parent when your toddler is on the verge of a meltdown … zoomies!” Cromartie explained in a text displayed on the video, which received 15.4 million views while saying that it “works every time.”

A lot of TikTok users praised this hack while some decided to use it as an opportunity to make others laugh.

“I Absolutely love it. Ive learned to totally distract them with love and a safe environment instead of instantly running to frustration. we got this!!,” one person commented.

“My kids would be crying running behind me lol,” another added.

As your kids grow and experience the world, so too will they continue to adapt and grow. Still, not all children develop at the same pace. Here are some intuitive ways that you can boost your toddler’s development so that they can cope with the excitement and challenges that await them.

Checking Out Textures

While it’s certainly possible to learn through sight and sound, touch is another way for your toddlers to explore the world. Even when it comes to learning the alphabet, this approach can help. By letting your toddler feel the shape of each letter, they can familiarize themselves with each letter’s appearance.

Label The House

One surefire way to help your toddler recognize letters and expand their vocabulary is by labeling items around the house. Each time they pass the item, they’ll familiarize themselves with its name and appearance, helping them to retain all the new vocabulary they pick up.

Plan A Scavenger Hunt

Given your experience with raising a toddler, you’ve probably realized that they can often wander off out of curiosity. After all, they’re raring to discover the world around them. For this reason, why not invoke their curiosity by arranging a scavenger hunt? This will help them to identify shapes and colors as they seek out items that you describe to them, all while keeping them entertained.

When raising your kids, it’s important to instill good habits in them from an early age in order to guide their future behavior. This is no different when it comes to eating healthy. Here are some ways to help you instill good eating habits in your toddler so that they take care of themselves when they grow up.

Lead by Example

If you want your children to believe you when you speak, it’s important to actually practice what you preach. Make sure to follow the rules you lay out for yourself such as eating the correct kinds of food and limiting the unhealthy snacks you eat.

Reduce the Pressure

Oftentimes, your kids may become more rebellious if you decide to put too much pressure on them to follow your rules. Rather, guide your kids from afar and let them make their own decisions from time to time and you may just be surprised at how much better they respond to your guidance.

Don’t Use Food as a Reward

Sometimes, when thinking of ways to reward our children for good behavior, we may be tempted to give them a tasty snack as a prize. Unfortunately, doing this in excess can convince them that eating junk food is associated with good behavior, thereby enforcing a belief that such food is actually good. Also, if you get your kids excited to eat dessert on the condition they finish their meal, this can make them lose focus on what’s really important to eat, namely the nutritious food.

You may find it hard to imagine asking your toddler to help you out with the household chores—surely they would break or drop something? However, multiple studies have shown that even very young children are capable of carrying out more than we usually give them credit for. Asking toddlers to help around the house can really develop their fine and gross motor skills while providing a boost to their confidence and sense of independence. Check out these relatively simple tasks that you can ask your toddler to lend a hand with.

Sorting Out Laundry

If you do the laundry regularly with your toddler, they will quickly learn and recognize which items are to whom in the household. You could ask them to deliver a pile of fresh laundry to an older sibling in the home. Alternatively, teach them how to help you fold sheets and other larger items—they will likely find this lots of fun and be eager to help you with it again!

Drying the Dishes

Even if you’re not quite prepared for your kid to help out with the washing up, drying the dishes is a great activity for toddlers. Start them off with lighter, less breakable items (any plastic beakers or plates are a perfect option) before graduating them onto drying cups and mugs. If you’re concerned about breakage, set them up with a dish drying station at a table or on a surface where they can hold the items properly.

Gardening

Due to their keen eyes and small size, kids are experts when it comes to weeding the vegetable patch. Once you’ve helped them identify what is a weed and what is growing produce, kit them out with some gloves and set them off. Many children love being out in the garden, so will persevere at this task for far longer than those set indoors. Getting your kid into gardening will also help to develop their love and respect for nature from an early age.

Deciding if your little one needs therapy can feel like a big step, but there are ways to navigate it in a way that feels right for your family. Let’s explore some gentle ways to figure out if therapy might be helpful for your toddler.

Assessing Developmental Steps

Take a peek at your kid’s milestones—like how they’re talking, playing, and getting along with others. If you notice any significant delays, chatting with a professional could be the ticket to help them shine.

Spotting Little Hiccups

Are there moments when your cutie’s behavior seems a bit off-kilter? Maybe they’re having more tantrums than usual or seem extra shy. These little red flags could be a sign that some extra support could make all the difference.

Chit-Chat With the Experts

Don’t hesitate to reach out to the pros—like your pediatrician or a child therapist. Sometimes they serve as real-life superheroes with tons of wisdom, and give you the scoop on whether therapy might be a good fit for your tiny human.

Family Check-in

Don’t forget to look inward and take a peek at your family dynamic, too. Sometimes life throws us curveballs, and therapy can be a safe space for everyone to chat, grow, and learn together.

The “Terrible Twos” phase can be challenging for both toddlers and parents alike. As children begin to explore their newfound independence, tantrums and defiance often become common occurrences. However, navigating this developmental stage doesn’t have to be a battleground. Here are three effective strategies for managing the Terrible Twos with patience and understanding.

Establish Consistent Boundaries

Consistency is key when it comes to setting boundaries for your toddler. Clearly communicate expectations and consequences for behavior, and follow through consistently. Toddlers thrive on routine and structure, so maintaining a predictable environment can help reduce their need for power struggles. When boundaries are consistently enforced, children feel secure and are more likely to comply.

Offer Choices

Toddlers crave autonomy, even if they may not have the ability to articulate it. Offering limited choices empowers them and gives them a sense of control over their lives. Instead of dictating every aspect of their day, offer options within parameters that you’re comfortable with. For example, let them choose between two snack options or which book to read before bedtime. By allowing them to make decisions, you can minimize resistance and foster cooperation.

Positive Reinforcement

Positive reinforcement is a powerful tool for encouraging desirable behavior in toddlers. Praise and reward your child when they exhibit positive behaviors, such as sharing toys or using manners. Celebrate their achievements, no matter how small, to reinforce good habits and build their self-esteem. By focusing on the positive aspects of their behavior, you can redirect their attention away from negative behaviors and encourage more desirable actions.

Selecting safe and age-appropriate toys is vital for your toddlers’ safety as well as their development and well-being. Here are three types of toys that are generally considered safe for toddlers.

Large Building Blocks

Large building blocks made of non-toxic materials are excellent for toddlers’ motor skills and cognitive development. These blocks are easy for little hands to grasp, and they encourage creativity as toddlers experiment with stacking and building. Look for blocks that are free from sharp edges and small components, reducing the risk of injury or choking.

Soft and Plush Toys

Soft and plush toys, such as stuffed animals or fabric dolls, are ideal for toddlers. Ensure that these toys are made from non-toxic materials, and avoid small detachable parts that could pose a choking hazard. Soft toys provide comfort and can be used for imaginative play, promoting creativity and emotional development.

Educational and Interactive Toys

Choose toys that are both educational and interactive, such as shape sorters, nesting cups, or musical instruments designed for toddlers. These toys promote sensory exploration, and help to develop motor skills, as well as cognitive development. Check for age-appropriate labels and ensure that any small parts are securely attached to prevent choking hazards.

Toddler tantrums are an inevitable part of the parenting process. However, a little patience and understanding can go a long way to helping you and your kids navigate these moments more effectively. Here are three tips for better dealing with toddler tantrums.

Remain Calm

In the heat of the moment, it can be easy to become flustered and respond with stress to a toddler tantrum. This will likely make your toddler even more upset however and in the long term, it could impart some unwanted lessons to your child. Instead, try and take some deep breaths before actively responding to a tantrum. Speak in a calm, soothing tone to try and de-escalate the situation, without giving in to your toddler’s demands. If it is a case of a lack of understanding, it may help to ask your toddler what it is that is upsetting them and to work together in your communication.

Consistent Boundaries

Toddlers benefit from consistent routines and predictability, and for many young children, knowing what to expect provides security and comfort. It will help to clearly communicate your expectations and consequences of different behaviors with your toddler and with your partner so that you are all on the same page. This way, your child begins to understand the consequences of having a tantrum, which will hopefully reduce their likelihood.

Distract and Redirect Them

One of the great things about toddlers is that they are easily distracted. Sometimes, all it takes to avoid a tantrum is to shift their attention to something new. This could be an object, a song, or a new environment. Be sure to not just give the toddler what they want in your attempts to distract them as this will reinforce bad habits. However, if done right, distracting your child from a tantrum can encourage your toddler to learn emotional regulation and develop their maturity.
