Have you ever thought of a library card as a superhero gadget for your child? It might not look like much, but this little piece of plastic is full of opportunity – from opening books filled with dragons to unlocking online resources that can help with tricky homework. The best part? It’s all free. Let’s dive into the benefits of having a library card.

Access to a Wealth of Resources

Libraries are treasure troves of knowledge. And they offer a lot more than just books! Children with library cards can access audiobooks, eBooks, magazines, and educational DVDs. Many libraries also provide access to online databases and learning tools, expanding the resources available to a child even from home.

Encourages Exploration and Discovery

With a library card, children are free to explore topics of interest without financial constraints. This freedom to explore can lead to the discovery of new hobbies, interests, and potential career paths. It’s a great way to support a child’s natural curiosity.

Supports Educational Success

Many libraries offer educational programs and services that support a child’s learning journey. From homework help to reading clubs and STEM activities, there is a lot to explore. These programs are designed to complement school learning, enhance critical thinking, and boost information literacy skills.

Getting kids excited about reading can sometimes feel like pulling teeth, especially in this day and age, with screen temptations lurking everywhere. But igniting a love for books is possible, even when it comes to the most reluctant readers. Here are five useful strategies to turn your kids into emerging bookworms.

Create a Reading Oasis

Design a cozy reading nook in your home filled with comfy cushions, soft blankets, and shelves stocked with enticing books. Make it a special space where kids can escape into their imaginations.

Be a Role Model

Show your kids that reading is cool by making it a part of your daily routine. Set aside time for family reading sessions and let your children see you enjoying books of your own.

Make it Interactive

Choose books with engaging stories, colorful illustrations, and interactive elements like lift-the-flap or touch-and-feel features. Encourage kids to participate by asking questions, making predictions, or acting out scenes from the story.

Visit the Library or Bookstore

Take regular trips to the library or bookstore and let your kids explore the shelves to discover new treasures. Attend storytime sessions or author events to make the experience even more exciting.

Incorporate Books into Daily Life

Integrate reading into every day activities by incorporating books into bedtime routines, car rides, and mealtimes. Encourage kids to read menus, signs, and labels to make reading a natural part of their environment.

Reading with your child is a real joy and a chance for the two of you to relax and enjoy time together. Reading books that have a high level of vocabulary, complex plots, or well-developed characters can help to boost their reading and interest in books. While there are many excellent children’s books out there, make sure you have at least one of these three in your home, as they are true classics.

Winnie The Pooh by A.A Milne

These books, featuring a cast of animal characters including the famous, lovable bear, have definitely stood the test of time. First published in 1921, the Winnie the Pooh character has since been turned into animations and feature films. The books are charming and focus on the gorgeous natural setting of the Hundred Acre Wood. The character of Christopher Robin is endearing, and a reminder that even when we grow up, we shouldn’t lose sight of the things that were precious to us in childhood.

Where The Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak

Another children’s classic that has been turned into a film, this book is an amazing example of the power of imagination. After Max is sent to bed without any supper, his bedroom transforms into a jungle, island environment, where he ends up meeting the Wild Things. Simultaneously funny and poignant, this book appeals to adults and kids in equal measure.

His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman

Better suited to older children, from the ages of 11 upwards, these books are famous for the incredible cast of characters that Pullman creates, and for the complex alternative worlds he imagines. Guaranteed to hook any reader, at whatever age, you could try taking it in turns to read sections aloud with your kid (the books are chunky, so will take some time to get through). As they are written for older children, there are plenty of moments of peril and some sections that are incredibly sad, but there are also many moments of heroism, love, and friendship.

Many of us have fond childhood memories of being read to before bedtime, and for some people, this can inspire a lifelong love of books and reading. Whilst there are many amazing children’s books out there, these three are truly epic and will inspire your kid’s imagination. You know how good your child’s vocabulary and understanding is, but generally, these books are best suited to children aged nine and above.

The Wizard Of Earthsea by Ursula Le Guin

Often when we think of fantasy, books such as Harry Potter and The Lord Of The Rings come to mind, but this truly epic tale from Ursula Le Guin is also a classic of the genre. Expect plenty of magic, mystery, dragons, and adventures. As it’s female-authored, this is a great book to read to young girls, as female characters have more autonomy and independence than in some similar fantasy novels. The book has also been adapted by Studio Ghibli and transformed into a rich, stunningly animated film.

Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

This stunning tale may well have both you and your kid in tears at times, but overall it is a heartwarming, beautiful story about the impact that animals can have on human lives. It also helps your kid to learn a little about life in Victorian times (it was published in 1877). Sewell wrote the book hoping to teach people are animal welfare, but it also has important lessons about treating people well, too.

Peter and Wendy (Peter Pan) by J.M. Barrie

An instant classic when it was published in 1904, this beautiful tale celebrates the wonders of youth, especially the magic of a child’s imagination. With plenty of action and adventure to keep you and your child engrossed, as well as poignant moments of tenderness, this is a tale that can withstand being told many times.

Some children take to reading very quickly and don’t need any encouragement to pick up a book, whilst others really struggle and view reading as a task. If your child falls into the latter group, read these quick tips to support them and encourage an interest in reading.

Check In With Their Teacher

Before starting anything at home, set up a meeting with their teacher. Depending on your child’s age, the teacher may think it’s a good idea to set up a dyslexia screening to check for the condition. If it turns out your child does have dyslexia, don’t panic – with appropriate support and resources, they can still make great progress in their reading.

Read Together

It is very easy to let reading at home tail off once your child reaches a certain level. Resist this urge and set aside time to read together, even if it’s just a few times a week. By taking it in turns to read, you will remove some of the pressure and cognitive load. You will also set an example, as a lover of reading, and you can help your child to understand the text in a more meaningful way. Take it in turns to choose books to read, this way you will expose your child to a wider range of reading material.

Write Them A Story

If you read regularly enough with your child, you should have a good idea of their comprehension and vocabulary level. You will also know lots about their favorite things, whether they are dog-obsesssed, keen on space, or desperate to be a firefighter. Use this knowledge to write a short story for them (one page is fine!) By showing them that you are an author, you will open up the possibility that they could be one, too. Encourage or help them to write their own, and remind them that to get ideas for your story, you read some good books to get inspired. Reading and writing go hand-in-hand, and the more your child wants to write, they more they will read.

It’s not a rarity for kids to struggle with reading, but there are many things you can do to give them a push in the right direction. If you’re looking for ways to make reading more fun for your kids, these five tips and tricks will get you there.

Lead By Example

Your children will be more likely to fall in love with reading if you lead by example and put an effort into reading to them aloud regularly, ideally from a young age.

Team Work

Once your kids actually start learning to read, reading to them all the time won’t be that helpful, but you can always turn reading into a group activity and read together with your kids.

Bring Reading to Life

You can make reading super fun if you approach it as a game. Encourage your kids to do funny voices to bring characters and stories to life and consider acting out interesting parts of the book.

Talk About Books

One of the best things about reading is that it can help your child develop imagination, especially if you take a moment to talk about books and help your kids get a better understanding of the things they’ve read.

Reading Choice

Your kids will be more likely to enjoy reading if you opt for a book that they’ll actually enjoy, so let them have an active role when choosing the reading material.
