There are always new advances being made in the world of medicine and in the way in which people are treated. Children need to be treated with a bit more delicately than adults. One of the new techniques that have proven to be successful with the treating of children who have had a traumatic experience is by using Sesame Street.
This is achieved through a group of videos and the idea was created initially by the Sesame Street in Communities group. Their goal with this work is to help in the education of families who have experienced traumatic situations. A lot of the funding for this project has come from the Robert Woods Johnson Foundation alongside other partners. This project is aimed towards the parent, children, caregivers and others similar parties within given communities.
Some of their main aims are to help children deal with the consequences of stressful or negative experiences like physical and emotional abuse, neglect, incarceration of their parents, being a witness to incidents of domestic abuse, mental illness, divorce or substance abuse.
Videos have been published for these kids who have well-known Muppets as part of them and they are proving to be a good coping strategy. Parents are provided with an explanation video of how this therapy works, as well as guidelines on the best way the parents can discuss the issues with their children. There a reals pamphlets and guides that help in this regard.
