You can keep your dad jokes, but today’s dads need to learn up when it comes to parenting. Families are different, our expectations have changed and guys who want to be great fathers need to know how to keep up with the times when it comes to parenting.

Forget Everything You Thought You Knew

You can’t be the dad your father was. Experts today are advising new fathers against using their own dads as role models for parenting. Baby boomer fathers are more likely to have worked outside the home and been less involved in hands on parenting. For the families of today, that’s not going to cut it.

Be The Early Bird

Before there’s even a kid, you should be honing your skills. Research shows that the way a father interacts with his partner during pregnancy can have significant effects on long-term parenting. So when your lady sends you on a late night ice cream run, know that this too, is for your kids.

Don’t be a Slacker

Being a parents means knowing what’s going on with your kids. That little league game matters and being a great father means keeping track of the details. You can’t hit the snooze button on being a dad, so buckle up; this one is going to be a while.

In It To Win It

No matter where things go in your life, or in your marriage, being involved with your kid needs to be a priority. Great dads are the ones who stick with it through thick and thin, putting their kids first even when the road gets rough.
