Parenting doesn’t exactly come with a manual, and there’s a reason for that. Every parent is different, every child is different, and the dynamic of every family is different as well! But there’s something else that’s different: the times. Parents are up against one of the most monumental shifts in world history, the advent of social media and device addiction. There’s a whole other conversation to be had about preventing your children from device addiction, but right now we’re going to talk about the pitfalls of parents getting addicted to their devices.
You’re Not Immune
Don’t for a second think that you’re immune to getting addicted to your device. The second you think you’re untouchable is the moment you fall prey to it. You must be vigilant because your children need your attention. Occasionally it’s good to let them play on their own and be independent, but it’s a slippery slope.
They Need You
Don’t just assume that your kids are “fine”. Shower them with love and attention, and make sure they understand that they’re your number one priority. Don’t allow them to think that they’re getting in the way of your “phone time”. You may not even realize that’s what you’re doing, but it’s important to be aware of that possibility. Don’t let your devices distract you from what’s important, because a day may come when you’ll wish you had spent less time on your phone and more time having fun with your kids.
