But while you may want your kids to avoid spreading rumors and other nasty habits like it, it’s important to understand why they do it so as to find a pathway to a solution. Here are some reasons why your kids might be spreading rumors.
Boredom
While it might be surprising, some kids don’t spread rumors because of a specific desire to do so, but rather out of boredom. When there’s minimal drama going on and perhaps a lack of social activities to enjoy, your kids may get the itch to create some drama as a means of stirring up some excitement.
Revenge
Everyone gets wronged at some point in their lives, however, not everyone has the same response to betrayals and feuds. Sometimes, your kids may seek to spread rumors to hurt the reputation or feelings of someone who has bullied or upset them. They may also just be feeling jealous of someone else, whether it’s because of their looks, intelligence, or talents.
Getting Attention
Making friends and getting social approval are crucial for your kids, especially as they look to become accepted by their peers. If they are struggling socially, then perhaps they’ll look to use rumors as a tool to climb the social ladder.
