From the thrill of scoring a winning touchdown to the heartbreak of a narrow defeat, sports can make or break your mood. Does this riskiness threaten to break your kids’ spirits? Here is how sports influence your kids’ mental health.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, athletes who are extremely concerned about their sport are at higher risk of mental health concerns, especially due to loss and injuries. According to the study, this issue increases when an athlete specializes in a specific sport and practices frequently.

Unfortunately, this can pose dangers for aspiring athletes. If your child sadly incurs an injury that curbs their time on the field or even brings an end to their sports career, it might be time for them to consider taking on a new lifestyle without their beloved sport. Naturally, this can be challenging, so it’s always good to discuss backup plans with your kids even before an injury or other setback occurs.

Still, such downsides should not discourage your children from playing sports. Not only is exercise important for their health, but they’ll improve their problem-solving, learn how to cope when things don’t go their way, and feel a sense of accomplishment when they win. Of course, there’s also the prospect of making friends in the process.

Seasonal depression, or Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), is a type of depression that occurs at the same time every year, usually in the fall and winter months when there’s less natural sunlight. While it’s commonly associated with adults, children and adolescents can also experience seasonal depression.

Understanding Seasonal Depression in Children

Children, much like adults, can be affected by the changes in seasons. Their young minds and bodies react to the reduced levels of sunlight, which can disrupt their internal biological clock and lead to feelings of depression. However, recognizing SAD in children can be more challenging. They might not be able to articulate their feelings or understand what they’re experiencing.

The Signs

Look for signs of sadness, irritability, or mood swings that seem to appear during the fall or winter months. Over-sleeping, difficulty waking up, or a disrupted sleep schedule can also be signs of SAD. Craving for carbohydrates, or a decreased appetite can occur. Children may lose interest in activities they usually enjoy or withdraw socially.

Managing Seasonal Depression

Consult a pediatrician or a mental health professional who can provide guidance and recommend appropriate treatment. With the right support and management strategies, children with seasonal depression can navigate the tougher months more comfortably and maintain a positive outlook.

But in case someone does get sick, it’s always better to be prepared. Here’s a quick guide with some of the basics you’ll want to keep in mind.

Recognize the Symptoms

Flu symptoms in children can include high fever, chills, sore throat, muscle aches, fatigue, cough, runny or stuffy nose, and sometimes, vomiting and diarrhea.

Seek Medical Attention

If you suspect your child has the flu, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. They can confirm the diagnosis, sometimes using a rapid flu test, and advise on the best course of treatment.

Keep Hydrated

The flu can lead to dehydration, especially if accompanied by fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. So make sure water, soup, and other liquids are on hand.

Manage Fever

Use over-the-counter medications like acetaminophen or ibuprofen to manage fever and relieve discomfort, as per your doctor’s advice.

Encouraging children to be physically active is essential for their overall health and well-being. The best way to do so is by making exercise a fun and integral part of your family’s routine. Here are some tips to help get your kids moving and exercising more.

Limit Screen Time

Set boundaries around screen time and encourage outdoor play instead. Limiting sedentary activities like watching TV or playing video games can motivate kids to be more active. Playing outdoors can also be vital for developing social skills in your children.

Show Them A Range Of Options

Introduce a variety of activities to keep things interesting and prevent boredom. Take advantage of community sports programs, swimming lessons, or martial arts classes to expose your kids to different forms of exercise.

Be Supportive And Encouraging

Praise your kids for their efforts and accomplishments, no matter how small. Encourage them to set goals and celebrate their progress along the way. This will help to make exercising a positive force in their life and should encourage them to find joy in activities and therefore be self-sustaining.

Thumb sucking is a common and seemingly adorable habit among babies and young children. But while it’s super cute, comforting, and may seem harmless in the short term, prolonged thumb sucking can have negative consequences in the long run. Constant thumb sucking can lead to misalignment of teeth and changes to the shape of the palate, which you really don’t want for your child. Also, the longer it lasts, the harder it is to break, which may also lead to social embracement at an older age.

Breaking the Habit: Top Tips

If you’re sold on thumb-sucking being a wolf in sheep’s clothing, here are a few key tips for breaking that persistent habit.

Gentle Redirection

When you see your baby sucking their thumb, gently redirect their attention by offering a soothing toy or engaging them in a different activity. This helps break the association between thumb-sucking and comfort.

Positive Reinforcement

When your baby refrains from thumb-sucking, offer them some positive reinforcement. Celebrate small victories to encourage them to continue practicing alternative soothing behaviors.

Reward System

If you’re dealing with a slightly older child refusing to ditch their thumb, try implementing a reward system like a sticker chart. This can help motivate children to gradually reduce and eventually stop thumb-sucking.

Bitter-Tasting Solutions

For particularly stubborn cases, consider applying a bitter-tasting substance to your little one’s thumb. Some solutions are designed specifically to stop thumb sucking, with the unpleasant taste helping to discourage the habit over time.

The birthday celebration of a new mom calls for gifts that acknowledge her strength (and recognize her exhaustion). If a new mom around you is about to celebrate her B-day, this curated selection of thoughtful presents is here to help you prepare for the occasion.

Spa Day Gift Certificate

Treat the new mom in your life to a day of relaxation and pampering with a spa day gift certificate. From massages and facials to complimentary wine and snacks, she’ll get that well-deserved “me time” away from the demands of motherhood.

Subscription to a Meditation App

Help her find moments of calm amidst the chaos with a subscription to a meditation app. With guided practices right at her fingertips, she can easily carve out moments to recharge throughout the day.

Customized Jewelry

If she’s less into experiences and more into concrete objects she can touch (and wear), a personalized piece of jewelry is a great option. It can be a necklace with her baby’s initials, or something entirely non-baby-related like a bracelet with a meaningful message engraved.

At the end of the day, new moms are just people – but they’re people with very specific (and often draining) lifestyles. By adapting your birthday gift to their unique needs, you’ll be able to make them feel appreciated, loved, and hopefully a little more relaxed.

Patch therapy is used for various eye conditions that can affect kids, with amblyopia, also known as lazy eye, being the most prominent. While eye patching is a highly efficient and simple way of curing amblyopia, the therapy itself can be quite uncomfortable for kids. If your little one needs to undergo patch therapy, here are some tips that you as a parent can use to help them out.

Create a Routine

Kids feel comfortable in a routine. Figure out the schedule for eye patching that best works for your kid and stick to it. You will encounter some resistance early on, but as time goes by, they will get used to it, and wearing an eye patch will become a habit for them.

Opt for High-Quality Patches

Your kid will have to wear an eye patch every day for several months, if not even more. This is why you should make sure to opt for high-quality patches that don’t come off easily and are comfortable, so your kid’s skin doesn’t feel irritated, and they don’t get the urge to rip it off.

Pick Out Patches with Fun Designs

Patches come adorned with all sorts of different colors and designs. Get ones that feature your kid’s favorite cartoon characters or things they like. This will make the whole process a bit more fun for them, and they won’t feel so self-conscious about wearing an eye patch.

Apply Reward System

Finally, you shouldn’t shy away from applying a reward system to encourage your kid to go through patch therapy. Set various milestones and promise them video games and activities they like or desserts they enjoy if they keep wearing an eye patch for a predetermined amount of time. This way, they will be more inclined to stick with it and disregard the negatives.

When their kid is battling a cough, the parents’ first instinct is to get them some kind of cough medicine. However, there are instances where cough kids might not be appropriate for kids, or you don’t have immediate access to the pharmacy. In these cases, you might want to try these home remedies to help your kid deal with a cough.

Warm Liquids

Warm or lukewarm liquids do a great job with cough. They will keep your kid hydrated, boosting their immune system while also breaking down mucus and soothing an ailing throat.

Honey

Honey is known to be a great alternative to cough medicine. Thanks to its texture, it coats the throat to make it less irritated while also providing a number of other benefits. However, keep in mind that honey isn’t suitable for kids under the age of one.

Salt Water

Take a teaspoon of salt and mix it in a cup of warm water. Encourage your kid to gargle the mixture as many times in one go as they can handle it. This not only helps calm down the sore throat but can also help battle some infections.

Humidifier

Dry air worsens the cough and makes it more pronounced. If you own a humidifier, place it in your kid’s bedroom and turn it on. The increased moisture level of air will reduce dryness of nasal passage and throat, providing cough relief.

Fruit juice is a super popular choice for a refreshing drink. There are so many flavors to choose from and they usually provide more vitamins and minerals than other soft drinks. But when possible it’s much better to choose real, fresh fruit instead of juice. This is especially important for children, and here are some reasons why.

Juice is High in Sugar

Fruit contains naturally occurring sugars which are much healthier than refined sugars, but are still not great in large quantities. Compared to a piece of fruit, juice contains way more sugar and as such is not great for kids’ teeth.

Fruit Contains Nutrients and Fiber

Although high in natural sugars fruit is still super healthy due to its range of vitamins and minerals. It’s also high in fiber which is important for a balanced diet. Juice on the other hand contains little to no fiber which makes it less healthy.

Fruit is Filling

Fruit juice is tasty and does contain some nutrients, but as mentioned is high in sugar. On top of this, it doesn’t fill you up, so it’s not as beneficial as having a piece of fruit which helps to curb hunger and give a good energy boost.

Hay fever is a chronic condition that can seriously impact how much we can enjoy the spring and summer seasons. Airborne pollen causes allergic reactions, the most common symptoms of which include itchy, watery eyes, a runny nose, and lots of sneezing. Children can be particularly affected, which is a huge shame as many kids love running around in grassy parks and fields over the summer. If your child suffers from hay fever, check out these tips on how to soothe them and alleviate their symptoms.

Close Windows

While it may seem like a shame to close windows on warm, sunny days, it’s a good idea to try and create as many pollen-free zones in your home as possible, so your kid has somewhere to rest and recuperate. This also means you will want to limit the plants you have in the home to non-flowering ones so that pollen isn’t being produced within your house. Closing the windows and drawing curtains or blinds shut, at least in the room your child sleeps in, is one way to reduce the amount of pollen inside.

Wear Sunglasses

Unfortunately, when we’re outside pollen doesn’t just enter our bodies through our mouths and noses. The eyes can also be an entry point, and as the eyes are particularly affected by hay fever, you will want to protect them as much as possible. Encourage your child to wear sunglasses when they’re outside, as this barrier can stop at least some of the pollen from entering. Protecting their eyes from UV glare will also ensure that their eyes aren’t feeling even more sore from straining in the light outside.

Natural Remedies

One of the most intriguing methods for combatting hay fever is to buy locally sourced honey. This can boost your kid’s natural immunity against the pollen in your local area, and it’s one way of dealing with hay fever which most kids can get on board with! You can also investigate saline nasal irrigation, these nasal washes can reduce the severity of your kid’s hay fever symptoms and are relatively easy to use.

From the thrill of scoring a winning touchdown to the heartbreak of a narrow defeat, sports can make or break your mood. Does this riskiness threaten to break your kids’ spirits? Here is how sports influence your kids’ mental health.

Of course, there’s also the prospect of making friends in the process.
