Being a new parent can be difficult for a handful of reasons. It’s not always easy to know if you’re doing the right thing, no matter how many online blogs you’ve read or how many tips from others you’ve received. One such situation where these doubts can arise is regarding the topic of picking up your baby. Believe it or not, many believe there is such a thing as picking up your baby too frequently. But is this true?
Coddling Them Too Much
The idea behind the belief of picking up a baby too much is about coddling them too much. You don’t want to spoil your baby to the point where everything upsets them, and where they think all they have to do is whine once and you’ll pick them up right away. On the other hand, you don’t want to ignore them completely, because that can be a form of child abuse.
Finding the Proper Balance
Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty. You need to get to know your baby’s cries. If your baby is truly crying from the gut of his or her soul, and you can tell that they desperately need you, this is when you should absolutely hold them and love them with all your heart. But if your baby’s cry isn’t so much of a cry as it is a whine, where they may be seeing how much they can “get away with”, that’s when you can exercise your right to let them simmer for a bit.
