Parents can’t help themselves but to try and do everything for their kids. While this is making it easier for the kids in the short term, it can prove counter-effective in the long term. They will learn to rely on their parents too much and lack valuable life skills later on.
Most experts agree that kids should be encouraged to be more independent in the preschool period, between the ages of four and six. By this age, they have already developed basic problem-solving and motor skills to handle tasks and make simple decisions on their own. Of course, becoming more independent is a long and complex process that your preschooler shouldn’t be rushed with. Instead, you can help them out with these five small steps.
Let Them Pick Their Clothes
This might be a tricky task if you let your preschoolers pick out clothes from scratch as they might decide to wear a T-shirt during winter. Instead, create a few combinations and let them pick out one that they like the most.
Let Them Dress Themselves
You should practice this when you are not in a hurry. Show your preschooler how to put on each item of clothing. Then let them try. It might take some practice, but they will eventually figure it out.
Have Them Put Away Toys
There is no need to be super strict about this, but your preschoolers should learn that they need to clean up after themselves. The best way to achieve this is to have them put away their toys after playing.
Encourage Them to Get Snacks and Drinks By Themselves
This will do wonders for your preschooler’s independence. They will also feel a sense of accomplishment when they realize they can get snacks for themselves when they are hungry and something to drink when they are thirsty.
Give Them Simple Chores
Having preschoolers do simple chores like taking out the garbage or setting up plates will not only help them become more independent but also boost their confidence.
