3 Tips For Baby-Led Weaning

If your little one is ready to start eating solids, you may be wondering whether to take the baby-led weaning route. Baby-led weaning is a method of introducing solid foods where babies feed themselves soft, safe finger foods instead of being spoon-fed purees. It helps babies explore different textures, and flavors, and develop their motor skills at their own pace. However, it can be overwhelming, messy, and even downright scary. Here are our top tips for a smooth baby-led weaning experience for you and your baby.

Invest in a Big Bib

There’s no two ways about it: baby-led weaning is messy. The best thing to do is invest in a bib that offers plenty of coverage and lay down newspapers or a cloth underneath the high chair for an easy clean-up. Try and let go and allow your baby to smear food all over themselves and mash it onto the table. Don’t serve food in plates or bowls, just lay it on the high chair tray and let your little one go to town.

Dine Together

The great thing about baby-led weaning is your baby can eat the same things that you eat (with a few exceptions/alterations). Sharing meals encourages your baby to try new foods by watching you eat and enjoying the same flavors. It’s also a great way to create family mealtime routines and make eating a fun social experience.

Start Slow

Baby-led weaning is a process. Don’t put pressure on yourself or your baby and remember they are still getting most of their nutrients from formula/breast milk. Start with offering little bits of food here and there and build up from there. Your baby will be enjoying a variety of foods independently in no time.
