Buying baby clothes can be tough to navigate, and sizing often happens to be the biggest problem. If you always end up buying clothes that are a number too big or too small, we’re here to help you make the right verdict in three short steps.

Baby’s Measurements

The sizing of baby clothes often differs from brand to brand, and it’s tough to make the right verdict. Babies of the same age also aren’t always the same size, so it’s a good idea to measure your baby before shopping for clothes to make sure they’ll be the right fit.

Sizing Chart

Baby clothes will often be labeled with months and years, but not necessarily with the measurements. Check if the size chart is available, especially when shopping online. It’s also a good idea to keep the tags on so you can exchange the clothing that doesn’t fit.

Keep Season in Mind

Buying clothes that are too small is a much bigger problem than buying clothes that are too big—but there’s one catch. If you’re buying baby clothes “for later”, keep in mind there’s a possibility you still won’t be able to use them if the fabric and sleeve size doesn’t match the season.

Most kids engage in activities every day which can produce plenty of mess. From painting to using a mud kitchen to experimenting with cooking, parents soon realize that stained clothing is just part and parcel of family life. However, there are ways of dealing with stains so they don’t ruin your kid’s clothing entirely. Check out these simple tips on removing some of the most common stains, so that your kids can get plenty of wear out of their clothing.

Blot it Out

As soon as a stain appears—or as soon as you spot it, because it may have happened at school or nursery—blot it with a dry towel or cloth. It’s important to remove as much of the surface residue as possible, so don’t go in with water straight away. If the stain is from something like chocolate or jam, it may even be possible to scrape the worst of the mark off of the fabric using a piece of card.

Use Water

Once you’ve blotted or scraped at the stain, wet a cloth with cold or lukewarm water and gently rub at the spot on the fabric. It’s important not to run hot water directly over the fabric, as depending on what’s caused the stain this can make it fix into the cloth even harder.

Use a Stain Remover

Once you’ve blotted the stain and got it wet, it’s time to move in with a stain remover. These come in many different forms—some of the most effective are wax-based soap bars, which you rub directly onto the stain before rinsing out. To use others, you’ll need to put the stained garment on a wash cycle with the stain-removing product added to the detergent draw on your washing machine. Give the garment time to dry out completely, as sometimes stains that appear dark on wet fabric fade to almost invisible once the fabric is dry.

If you’re a parent, you probably know all too well how quickly kids grow out of their clothes. One day, they fit perfectly, the next, they’re barely making it past their knees! Let’s explore some practical and thoughtful ways to clear out those closets without just tossing everything into the trash.

Donate to Charities

One of the most impactful ways to deal with outgrown children’s clothes is to donate them to charities. Many organizations accept gently used children’s clothing and provide them to families in need. This not only helps you clear out your space but also supports those in your community who can benefit from these items.

Hand Them Down

If you have younger children or relatives, consider keeping the best pieces for hand-me-downs. This can save you money and extend the life of the clothes. It’s also a fun way for younger siblings to feel connected to their older brothers or sisters.

Swap with Other Parents

Lastly, consider organizing or participating in a clothing swap with other parents. This is a fun way to refresh your child’s wardrobe without buying new clothes and is an excellent opportunity for socializing. You can set up a swap among your neighborhood, school, or friend group.

When your kid comes back from playing outside with a new rip in the knee or elbow of their clothes, it can be tempting to despair and add it to an ever-growing pile of their clothing that needs repairing. All too often, these clothes get discarded and new ones bought in their place, but this is ultimately an unsustainable and costly approach. By learning some simple sewing skills, you can quickly mend minor rips and tears and extend the wear of your kid’s clothing.

Patch a Hole

If there are small holes developing in your child’s clothes, learning to patch these is an essential skill. There are plenty of easy to follow videos on YouTube, so this is a good starting point. Make sure you have a sharp, slim needle, as a large one will make the holes worse, and select a thread that’s as close as possible in color to the fabric of the clothing. You are aiming to create a patch over the hole constructed from the thread, rather than trying to close the hole, as this will make the fabric bunch and look misshapen.

Re-Hem

Knowing how to re-hem a pair of pants or a sleeve on a shirt is a great skill, especially as these are often the parts of clothing that kids wear or get very scruffy. Make sure you watch a good tutorial before starting, and a decent pair of dressmaking scissors are essential so that you can cleanly cut through the fabric you want to re-hem.

Replacing Buttons

Replacing buttons is one of the easiest sewing tasks, but you do need to make sure that you securely attach the buttons, without stitching them on so tightly that your child can’t manipulate them or close them. Crossing the thread over itself and looping the needle underneath the thread as you stitch the button on will ensure that it is securely fastened and unlikely to come loose again.

Buying shoes for kids can be a frustrating experience, as no sooner have you left the store with some brand new, boxed-up shoes, your kid is likely to be complaining that their feet are getting pinched and they need to size up again! With this in mind, it can be a good idea to limit your kids’ shoes to some essential styles so that they have options and versatility, but you don’t have to worry about spending a small fortune on children’s footwear. Here are three of the essential shoe styles most kids will need.

Sandals

Children adore running around on sand or grass in the summer. Sandals offer a good compromise, as you can insist that shoes stay on but your kid can still feel the sun, wind, and sand on their toes through the sandals. If your child is younger, it may be worth opting for a pull-on pair, as children can struggle with the buckles found in many sandal styles.

Smart Sneakers

As well as investing in a pair of sandals and sturdy boots, make sure your child has some cute and comfortable sneakers to slip on their feet on those more active days. Sneakers are generally easy to wear and lightweight, so your child can do plenty of moving and running around, but they will protect feet a little more than sandals. Opt for a pull-on pair, or if your child is learning to do their laces, use a new pair of lace-up sneakers as an incentive.

Winter Boots

Buying a pair of zip-up or pull-on winter boots is a must, as your child is likely to have plenty of puddles to navigate on their way to school in the winter. Although kids are often drawn to embellishments such as fake fur linings, try and encourage your child to see the benefits of a simple, sturdy pair that will keep their feet warm and dry throughout the colder months.

Whether or not your kids have to wear a prescribed uniform to school, ensuring that they are comfortable and appropriately dressed can be challenging. After all, there are so many different textures, sizes, and garment fits out there. Here are some easy tips to help you ensure that your kids are well-dressed for school.

Consider the Weather

When your kids go to school, it’s important to remember that sometimes it might rain and storm. In this case, you won’t want them to be uncomfortable. At the same time, some materials are very hot in the summer. Avoid dressing your kids in leather and suede and rather go for cotton, polyester, and other materials that are more breathable and easier to clean if they get dirty.

Dress Them Appropriately

Many schools are bound to have a dress code. Naturally, it’s vital to ensure that your kids keep in line with this policy. Also, because your children are still young, it’s important that they dress in an age-appropriate way, whereby their clothes are not too revealing or simply better fitted for older people.

Comfort Is Key

No matter how good the clothes might look, ensuring your child’s comfort is a priority. Speak to your kids and ensure that they are comfortable with the size, style, and feel of each garment they try on so that it doesn’t bother them. If your kids are really young or unable to express themselves verbally, feel and examine the garment carefully yourself to ensure its comfort.

Let’s face it, kids and messes go hand-in-hand. From grassy soccer games to art projects gone awry, their clothes often end up looking like a war zone. For those messy days, here are three stain-fighting tips to banish those pesky marks.

Act Swiftly

The golden rule of stain removal: address it as soon as possible. Fresh stains are much easier to tackle than set-in ones. So, the moment you spot a splatter, blot up any excess liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth (avoid rubbing, which can spread the stain).

Know Your Enemy

Different culprits require different approaches. Here’s a quick cheat sheet:

  • Protein Stains (blood, milk, yogurt): Pre-treat with cold water or a paste of baking soda and water. Hot water can actually set these stains!
  • Greasy Stains (oil, butter): Blot up excess oil with a paper towel. Apply a dish soap solution or laundry detergent directly to the stain.
  • Fruit Stains: Pre-treat with a mixture of white vinegar and water, or blot with a club soda-soaked cloth.

Patience is a Superpower

Sometimes, stubborn stains require a little extra effort. Don’t be afraid to pre-treat and re-wash if necessary.  Letting the stain remover sit on the stain for some time before washing can also work wonders.

As parents, we all know the struggle. Kids grow like weeds, and their clothing barely gets a chance to wear out before it’s too small. But here’s a solution that’s both fun and eco-friendly: clothing swaps! To help you get started, here’s a quick guide.

Benefits of Clothing Swaps

Clothing swaps are a fantastic way to find high-quality clothes for your kids at a fraction of the retail price. Swaps also prevent perfectly good clothes from ending up in landfills. And, don’t forget, swaps are social events! They create a fun opportunity to connect with other parents and build a sense of community.

Ready to Host a Clothing Swap for Parents? Here’s How

  1. Find Your Space: Consider a community center, park pavilion, or even a spacious friend’s house.
  2. Spread the Word: Promote your swap through social media groups, local parent forums, and flyers at schools or daycare centers.
  3. Organize the Clothes: Categorize the clothes by size and type (e.g., tops, bottoms, outerwear) on tables or racks. Encourage participants to do the same with their contributions.
  4. Let the Swapping Begin! Once everyone arrives, allow time for browsing and swapping.
  5. If there are any unclaimed clothes, consider donating them to a local charity or children’s shelter.

There’s nothing quite as precious as a tiny human with a full head of hair, whether it’s a downy fuzz or a head full of soft curls. And what better way to celebrate their adorableness than with some cute hair accessories? Here are some fun options your little one will love.

For the Littlest Ones (Newborns to 3 months)

Opt for ultra-soft, stretchy soft headbands made from organic cotton or nylon blends. These won’t irritate your baby’s delicate skin and can come in adorable prints, solid colors, or with tiny bows. Knotted beanies are another cute option perfect for newborns.

For the Movers and Shakers (4 Months and Up)

Look for soft fabric clips with small bows, flowers, or animal shapes. These are gentle on your baby’s hair and come in many colors and patterns to complement any outfit. If your baby has enough hair for a tiny ponytail, you can also go for soft elastic ponytail holders specifically designed for babies. These won’t pull on their delicate hair and come in adorable colors and patterns.

Beyond the Cuteness Factor

Always make sure the hair accessories you choose are soft and comfortable. Avoid anything with sharp edges, small beads, or anything that could come loose and become a choking hazard.
